Safety in South Florida
Although South Florida's tourists areas are generally safe, visitors should still take precautions in order to avoid becomming a victim. Avoid high-crime areas like Miami's Liberty City neighbourhood. if you don't know the location of these areas, ask the locals, hotel personnel, rental employees or tourist office clerks.

Avoid deserted and marginal areas at night. Avoid parks and beaches at night, unless there is a large crowd of people.

Don't flash large amounts of money when paying bills and never carry valuables in public.  Keep your hotel room and car doors locked. When traveling between destinations, keep your valuables locked in the vehicle trunk, not on a seat where they are easy prey to to criminals. Only take taxis clearly identified with official company logos and emblems. If you are confronted by criminals, the rule of thumb is give them what they want.
